Write an introduction to an informative and factual blog post titled "The ’Lies’ Americans Believe About Islam".
Difficulty understanding the complex religion of Islam is not exclusive to Muslims themselves. The complicated nature of Islamic theology often lends itself to misunderstandings that then propagate into the larger culture, often without careful consideration or informed analysis of their foundation in Islam itself.
For the case of “The ‘Lies’ Americans Believe About Islam,” the issue addressed is the common perception of Islam as a violent religion, founded on ruthless conquest. The focus of this blog post is to examine this misconception by analyzing its historical context.
The rise of Islam began in Mecca, in an era called the Jahili period, or the time of ignorance. This refers to ancient Arab tribal societies where polytheism was prevalent. Mecca itself was no exception. The Kaabbah housed 360 idols that were worshiped by the people of Mecca at that time, including many deities represented by objects such as stone or wood.
The Kaabbah required frequent cleaning at that time, and required seven annual stone renovations on average, normally performed by slaves. It was the physical embodiment of an idolatrous environment that focused all of its worship around artificial objects.
Muslim historians refer to the Kaaba as “a house of idols” because their first purpose was to serve as a shrine for worshiping idols of the goddess Al-Lat (“the goddess”), her son Hubal (“the prophet”), and their family including daughters Coursar (“the enchantress of love) and Al-Uzza (the goddess). ”
Muhammad’s mission began as a call to prayer. His first followers were those who saw him as a messenger from God—a human who was the sole conduit between God and his people. The earliest converts to Islam were not trying to start or join a new religion; they were joining Muhammad’s movement of reform within their society, which he called “the Truth” (Al-Haqq). This is because Muhammad communicated that Islam was not meant to be an independent religion; it is supposed to be reforming the pre-Islamic religions of Arabia through total submission to God, or in Arabic, al-islam (the surrender). ”
Muhammad’s message was rooted in the monotheistic belief that God is the only one worthy of worship. On this, all of the prophets agree. Islam is not a new religion; it is supposed to be reformative in nature. The centrality of Muhammad’s mission was to bring people back to their earliest traditions by reminding them that they had forgotten about worshiping God alone.
The Qur’an states: “Forget your ancestral gods; I will forgive you for your sins against me” (Qur’an 43:23). 8481eaaddfaf72
